What Makes the SawStop Bandsaw Different?

Bandsaws have long been considered one of the safer benchtop or floor-standing machinery options compared to table saws, but serious blade-contact injuries still occur. SawStop’s new bandsaw tackles this risk head-on while packing in top-tier performance engineering.

1. Sensic™ Active Safety Technology

The headline feature is the adaptation of SawStop's signature safety system. Powered by Sensic™ Active Safety, the bandsaw continuously monitors contact between the user’s skin and the active blade. Upon detecting contact, the safety cartridge stops the blade in milliseconds to prevent severe lacerations and amputations.

Just like their table saws, SawStop offers free replacement brake cartridges if the activation is confirmed to have been caused by accidental contact with skin.

2. Automatic Electronic Braking

In everyday use, you do not have to wait for the blade to coast to a slow stop after turning off the power. Pressing the start/stop paddle engages an automatic electronic brake that brings the spinning blade to a complete stop within 2 seconds.

3. Built for Heavy Resawing & Precision Cutting

Beyond safety, this is a serious shop tool engineered for demanding woodworkers. It boasts a 14-inch resaw capacity and a 13.4-inch throat capacity, allowing woodworkers to re-saw wide slabs or cut intricate veneers effortlessly.

4. Smart Workshop Ergonomics

  • Versatile Rip Fence: Features a 5.5-inch high HDPE fence face that converts between high and low orientations, supports micro-adjustments to compensate for blade drift, and stores away on an integrated rear holder when not in use.

  • Integrated Task Lighting: Built-in lighting directly above the upper blade guides eliminates shadows along the cut line for maximum visibility.

  • Dual Dust Collection: Dual 4-inch dust ports below the table keep fine wood dust out of the air and out of the machine's internal components.

Why Woodworkers Are Excited

For years, woodworkers have asked if skin-sensing tech would ever move beyond table saws. Bandsaws involve close-hand work when guiding small pieces or performing intricate curve cuts, making them prime candidates for active protection.

By pairing industrial-grade stability, smooth power options, drift-compensating fences, and active contact detection, SawStop is setting a new benchmark for woodshop safety equipment.
