What are the benefits of pairing the Shaper Origin with the Shaper Workstation?

The Shaper Workstation acts as the ultimate fixture system for the Origin. It makes cutting tricky tenons, mortises, box joints, and end-grain operations remarkably fast, safe, and easily repeatable by perfectly securing small or complex workpieces to the router.

What is ShaperTape, and is it reusable?

ShaperTape is a proprietary tape featuring a high-contrast domino pattern that Shaper Origin’s camera tracks to orient itself in space. Because the tool must precisely map the field of work, ShaperTape cannot be peeled up and reused on a different project, though a single tape placement can be used for multiple cuts on the same workpiece.

Can Shaper Origin cut materials other than wood?

Yes! While highly popular for advanced woodworking joinery and furniture making, the Shaper Origin is incredibly versatile. Equipped with a specialty spindle co-developed with Festool, it cleanly cuts plastics, soft composites, solid-surface materials (such as Corian), and even nonferrous metals like aluminum.

What software do I need to design projects for Shaper Origin?

Shaper Origin reads standard vector files (.svg). You can design your projects using any vector editing software you are already comfortable with, including Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Vectorworks, or Autodesk Fusion 360.

What is the Shaper Origin and how does it work?

The Shaper Origin is the world’s first handheld CNC router. Instead of strapping your workpiece to a massive, stationary CNC bed, you bring the portable Origin directly to the work. Using a built-in camera system and specialized ShaperTape reference markers, the tool tracks its own position and automatically auto-corrects your hand movements down to 1/100th of an inch.
